Archeologists Discover an Ancient Mayan City in the Forest That’s Been Hidden for 2,000 Years

Archaeologists recently uncovered the remains of an ancient Mayan settlement spanning 650 square miles across the Mirador-Calakmul Karst Basin region, near the Mexico border.

The site, which is believed to have once consisted of nearly 1,000 settlements connected by one hundred miles of causeways, includes the remnants of platforms, pyramids, reservoirs, and canals. This remarkable discovery allows us to explore and appreciate the wonders of a long-lost Mayan city.

Unveiling a Hidden City: LiDAR Technology Discovers Lost Remains 

Scientists have discovered the remains of a lost city using a form of laser technology known as LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging. This remote sensing method sends pulses of laser light from an airplane, which reflects back to form an image of the landscape beneath.

By using this technology, the scientists have managed to cut through the foliage and cloud formations to gain a clear view of the site, uncovering the previously hidden city. This remarkable discovery has been made possible with the aid of LiDAR technology.

Unprecedented Find: Ancient Mesoamerican City Reveals Surprising Population Density 

Archaeologists and historians have long held the belief that ancient Mesoamerican settlements were sparsely populated. However, a new discovery has thrown this idea out the window. Excavations at a newly discovered site reveal a densely populated city with hubs for recreation, trade and politics.

Furthermore, some of the settlements appear to have had some form of ball court, similar to what is commonly seen in homes today. This unprecedented find has been highly significant in providing greater insight into the societal structure of the ancient Mesoamerican civilization.

The use of LiDAR technology has unlocked ancient mysteries in the Maya Lowlands. A new article in the Cambridge University Press journal Ancient Mesoamerica reveals the discovery of one of the largest, contiguous, regional LiDAR studies to date in the region.
