Christian Group Call For Resignation of Prominent Supreme Court Justice

By: Ben Campbell | Last updated: Jul 02, 2024

Faithful America, a group of 180,000 Christians, has started a petition demanding US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito to resign.

The move comes after leaked recordings revealed Alito’s controversial comments about God’s role in U.S. society. The petition signifies a major shift in the support from a traditionally conservative base.

Faithful America’s Mission

Faithful America is dedicated to social justice, defending the separation of church and state, and opposing Christian nationalism. The group’s petition against Alito highlights their commitment to these values.

Newsweek describes the organization as a prominent advocate for these causes, aiming to hold influential figures accountable.

Leaked Comments Spark Outrage

In leaked recordings, Alito discusses the ideological divide in the U.S., stating, “One side or the other is going to win.”

He admits the differences between the left and right are impossible to reconcile. These comments have raised concerns about his impartiality as a Supreme Court Justice.

Alito’s Call for “Godliness”

The most alarming part of the recordings for many was Alito’s call to restore “godliness” in the U.S.

He agreed that it’s important to keep fighting for a return to these values. This stance has intensified the debate over his ability to separate personal beliefs from his judicial duties.

Filmmaker Secretly Records Alito

Alito made the controversial comments during a dinner party. According to reports, filmmaker Lauren Windsor secretly recorded the voice clip.

These comments have left many questioning whether Alito’s personal opinions may affect his ability to perform his judicial duties fairly.

Alito Faces Further Scrutiny

Alito faced further scrutiny after another comment uttered by the justice appeared online.

“One side or the other is going to win. I mean, there can be a way of working, a way of living together peacefully, but it’s difficult because there are differences in fundamental things that can’t be compromised. So it’s not like you are going to split the difference,” he said.

Past Controversies Resurface

This isn’t Alito’s first brush with controversy, though. In 2021, an upside-down U.S. flag was seen flying over his home in Alexandria, Virginia.

This flag, often used by Trump supporters to signify dissent post-2020 election, raised eyebrows and questions about his political leanings.

Responsibility for the Flag

The Washington Post reported that Martha-Ann Alito, his wife, took responsibility for the controversial flag, calling it a “signal of distress.”

She allegedly spat out at neighbors, which added fuel to the already burning fire of public scrutiny. This incident added to the perception of Alito’s household’s political stance.

Alito Explains the Upside-Down Flag

Alito would later comment on the upside-down flag that appeared outside his home in Virginia.

“My wife is a private citizen, and she possesses the same First Amendment rights as every other American,” Alito wrote a letter sent to members of Congress. “She makes her own decisions, and I have always respected her right to do so,” he said

Justice Claims He Was Unaware of the Connection

Alito claims he was unaware of the connection between the upside-down American flag and the so-called “Stop the Steal” movement.

“I was not aware of any connection between that historic flag and the ‘Stop the Steal Movement,’ and neither was my wife. She did not fly it to associate herself with that or any other group, and the use of an old historic flag by a new group does not necessarily drain that flag of all other meanings,” he said

The “Appeal to Heaven” Flag

In 2023, the Alitos had the “Appeal to Heaven” flag displayed at their vacation home in New Jersey.

This revolutionary-era banner is often used by far-right movements to highlight Christian values, further complicating Alito’s image as an impartial judge.

Faithful America’s Stand

Faithful America’s petition (which has gained more than enough signatures to pass its goal) is a clear statement against what they perceive as Alito’s inability to separate his faith from his judicial responsibilities.

Their stand reflects a broader concern among Christians about maintaining the integrity of the judiciary and upholding the separation of church and state.

Public Reaction

The public reaction to Alito’s comments and the subsequent petition has been mixed. Some see it as a necessary step to preserve judicial impartiality, while others view it as an attack on a conservative ally.

A Call For Alito to Resign

Following the controversial actions of Alito, the Christian group Faithful America took it upon themselves to call for Alito’s resignation and went as far as to start a petition to achieve their goal.

The petition reads: “Dear Justice Samuel Alito, As members of the Christian organization Faithful America, we are deeply disappointed by your recent comments at the Supreme Court Historical Society’s annual dinner, agreeing that the United States should move to a place of ‘godliness.”

Alito's Comments Violate Separation of Church and State

According to Faithful America, Alito’s comments clearly violate the separation of the Church and state.

“These comments distort Christianity, violate the separation of church and state, and appear to endorse an extra-judicial agenda of Christian nationalism,” reads the petition.

Unfit to Serve as Supreme Court Justice

As a result of his alleged nationalist beliefs, the Christian organization has deemed Alito unfit to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.

“One of the flags, the ‘Appeal to Heaven,’ is even a symbol of Christian nationalism carried by insurrectionists. You are unfit to serve on our nation’s highest court, and we demand that you immediately resign. Thank you,” they wrote

Petition Gains Traction

The Faithless America petition has garnered significant support online, obtaining over 17,000 signatures by mid-June.

While the Christian group, which defines itself as a “community of Christians putting faith into action for love and social justice,” initially set a goal of 15,000 signatures, once this was achieved, they promptly raised the target to 20,000.

The Importance of Judicial Impartiality

The role of a Supreme Court Justice requires an unwavering commitment to impartiality. Alito’s comments and the symbols displayed at his homes have raised serious questions about his ability to remain unbiased.

Updated Comments From Faithful America

The Christian group added further comments to its petition site, alleging that Alito’s comments violate the Constitution and that he should be held accountable for them.

“(Alito’s) extraordinary comments twist our faith, endorse a Christian-nationalist agenda, and violate the Constitutional separation of church and state — and that’s not all. They also come on the heels of the news that Alito’s homes flew two right-wing flags contesting the legitimacy of the 2020 election,” they wrote.

The Future of Faithful America’s Petition

The petition against Alito is gaining traction, but its success remains uncertain. Regardless of the outcome, Faithful America’s actions have highlighted significant concerns about the intersection of faith and judicial responsibility.

Faithful America Call For More Signatures

Faithful America has called on like-minded people across the states to come forward and sign the petition, which could ultimately force the controversial justice to step down.

“This man is far from impartial and cannot remain a justice on our nation’s highest court. As a grassroots movement of Christians, let’s join together to demand that Justice Alito immediately resign,” they wrote

Alito Won’t Step Down Willingly

Alito has since come out and confirmed he has no plans to willingly step down.

“I am confident that a reasonable person who is not motivated by political or ideological considerations or a desire to affect the outcome of Supreme Court cases would conclude that the events … do not meet the applicable standard for recusal,” he wrote. “I am, therefore, required to reject your request,” said Alito.

The High Standards of Supreme Court Justices

Despite his attempt to convince the American people that his comments have no significant outcome on his ability to uphold the law, Faithful Americans believe otherwise.

They argue that Alito’s comments raise certain ethical concerns and that the Justice’s recent actions have fallen short of the high standards expected of Supreme Court Justices.
