Donald Trump’s Vice President Update: Who’s the New Favorite?
Ohio Senator J.D. Vance is now the favored candidate to be Donald Trump’s next running mate, according to bookmakers.
Previously identified as a frontrunner for Trump’s potential vice president, Vance has now emerged as the top candidate among several U.K.-based bookmakers, as reported by Oddschecker.
Vance Overtakes Burgum
Vance has surpassed North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.
Burgum was the favorite following his appearance with Trump at a New Jersey rally in May.
Vance Becomes Betting Favorite
Oddschecker spokesperson Leon Blackman made a statement to Newsweek.
“Over the past 24 hours, we’ve seen J.D. Vance become the betting favorite on Oddschecker in the race to become Donald Trump’s vice president”.
Odds Improve
Initially listed at odds of 5/2 earlier in the week, Vance’s odds have since been cut, overtaking Burgum.
In the last 24 hours, Vance has attracted 18 percent of all bets placed on Oddschecker for Trump’s VP pick.
Rubio Third Favorite for Trump
Florida Senator Marco Rubio is now the third favorite to be named Trump’s running mate.
There was speculation that Rubio might be announced as Trump’s pick during a recent rally in Doral, near Rubio’s hometown.
Trump Jr. to Speak Before VP Announcement
Vance’s emergence as the favorite coincides with reports that Donald Trump Jr. will speak before his father’s vice-presidential pick at the Republican National Convention.
This event is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee on July 17.
Vance Favored
Trump Jr., a strong advocate of Vance, is expected to speak just before the announcement of the GOP running mate, suggesting Trump has “zeroed in” on Vance.
However, Brian Hughes, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, has downplayed these suggestions.
Only Trump Knows the Choice
“As President Trump has said himself, the top criteria in selecting a vice president is a strong leader who could make a great president,” Hughes told Axios.
“But anyone telling you they know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying unless that person is named Donald J. Trump.”
Vance's Rise Fueled by Trump's 2022 Endorsement
Offices of both Trump and Vance have been contacted for comment via email.
Vance, author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” rose from political novice to Ohio senator, largely thanks to Trump’s endorsement in 2022.
From "Never-Trump" to Loyal Ally
Once a “never-Trump guy” in 2016, Vance has become one of Trump’s staunchest defenders in Congress and a strong supporter of his America First agenda.
Vance has acknowledged that not being asked to be Trump’s running mate would be a “disappointment.”
"There Will Be a Little Bit of Disappointment" if Not Chosen
“I’m human, right?” Vance told Fox News in June.
“And so, when you know this thing is a possibility, if it doesn’t happen, there is certainly going to be a little bit of disappointment.” He added, “They’ll ask me if they ask me, and if they don’t, that’s fine.”
Pence Fallout
Trump is seeking a new running mate after his relationship with former Vice President Mike Pence deteriorated.
The fallout occurred following the January 6 attack.
