Scientists Have Found Extraterrestrial Metal in These Spanish Ornaments

With science being updated more and more daily, it is hard to believe that people who lived thousands of years ago would have had the technology to make important discoveries.

However, Spanish scientists have recently discovered extraterrestrial metal that is believed to be from the Bronze Age. The main question they need to answer is how it got there.

The Museum of Villena Has a Villena Treasure Exhibition

According to the Region of Valencia website, the Museum of Villena hosts many objects from the Upper Paleolithic, Epipaleolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Ages.

As well as the gold, there is a bracelet, steel pommel, and three silver bottles. These may not sound special on their own, but together they make up a unique group that cannot be compared to anything else that comes from the same time.

The Treasure of Villena Is Europe’s 'Most Important Prehistoric Treasure'

The Treasure of Villena was discovered in December 1963 by José María Soler and is believed to have been hidden around 3,000 years ago.

There Were Several Mysteries with the Treasure of Villena

The Treasure of Villena has been shrouded in mystery, with one of these mysteries being how it got there.

The findings seemingly have no relationship to any of the nearby archaeological sites other than one exception, which was the Cabezo Redondo hoard.

Some of the Metal Is of Mysterious Origins

Whilst most of the metal in the pieces that were part of the Treasure of Villena are gold and silver, there were traces of what El País has described as a “dark leaden metal.”

This was initially believed to be either ferrous oxide or another form of terrestrial metal. However, it is now known that this metal is extraterrestrial.

The Difference Between Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial Iron

Even though terrestrial and extraterrestrial iron might have some similarities, further tests can show how they are different.

ZME Science reports that scientists did an analysis of the iron and found that the iron-to-nickel ratio wasn’t the same as what would be found on Earth.

Meteorite Iron Items Are Rare

One thing that makes the Treasure of Villena even more special is that items containing meteorite iron are rare and are mostly known to be from eastern Mediterranean cultures.

Montero Ruiz believes that a meteorite likely fell in the area, which would have enabled them to learn about the properties of the material and how to shape it.

Other Meteorite Iron Objects Have Also Been Discovered

The Treasure of Villena isn’t the only Bronze Age artifact with meteorite iron in it; other ancient artifacts were previously discovered to have it.
