The McNeal Mansion: An Abandoned 10,000-Square-Foot 1800s Home Nature Is Reclaiming

A photographer has shared rare images of an abandoned 10,000-square-foot home in New Jersey once owned by one of the wealthiest men in the region. Considered an architectural masterpiece, the McNeal Mansion in Burlington was constructed well over a century ago by the prominent industrialist Andrew McNeal.

It was a symbol of opulence and grandeur, standing as a testament to its owner’s wealth and influence. However, it has since been reclaimed by nature and continues to deteriorate with each passing year as new owners fail in their attempts to renovate the property.

The Construction of the McNeal Mansion

Around 1866, Andrew McNeal purchased a large plot of land on the banks of the Delaware River in New Jersey. He would construct a 10,000-square-foot mansion here to serve as his luxurious family home.

However, McNeal was the only person who used the mansion as their home. After he died, the US Pipe company, which had previously incorporated McNeal’s pipe manufacturing business in 1899, turned the mansion into offices for their company.

The Mansion is Abandoned

During the middle of the 20th century, the pipe company decided to relocate its offices, and ever since, the once impressive home has been left to deteriorate.

Several restoration projects have been proposed over the years, each aiming to restore the mansion to its former glory. Within the structure, numerous half-completed construction projects pay testament to the efforts of former owners and preservationists to revive the structure.

Photographer Takes Photos of McNeal Mansion

Richard Lewis, a New Jersey-based photographer who has a passion for sharing images of abandoned historical buildings, ventured to the mansion in 2016 to explore its ruins.

Speaking about his passion with Business Insider, he said, “I thought, I now have a reason to photograph these abandoned buildings, and it’s to honor and preserve that history. A lot of these abandoned places that aren’t in great shape are eventually going to disappear.”

Photographer Claims It’s an Odd Building

Lewis would explore the entirety of the house, which later had three wings added during its tenure as offices.

“It’s an odd building because even though it was originally a mansion, it became a company headquarters later on with office space later on,” Lewis said.

The Ornate and Decorative Aspects of the Home

Lewis shared his thoughts on the McNeal mansion, detailing some of the rooms that still have their original furnishing.

“In the center, it looks very ornate and decorative, but when you look at the wings, they look very strange because they’re just these big open spaces. Knowing the history really helped me photograph it,” he said.

There will come a time when the iconic home will be beyond repair. However, just under a decade ago, the McNeal mansion was given a lifeline after reports surfaced that a group was interested in converting it into a business.

McNeal Mansion’s Potential

Two fires broke out at the home in 2021, severely damaging two buildings, yet the main building remained unscathed.

Lewis Speaks on Events That Lead to Photographing the Building

Lewis went on to detail how he first learned about the mansion. He and his wife had visited a bar on the deck that had been opened to raise funds for renovations.

Lewis detailed how the city manager invited a historian who came and took “photos of it on their cell phone but didn’t even want to go inside.”

He continued, “Since he knew I was insured, he said if I could sign a liability waiver, he would give me free access to the place. I was allowed to go in there and spend as much time as I wanted taking photos, as long as I shared those images with the city and the Burlington County Historical Society.”

The Structural Integrity of the McNeal Mansion

“The McNeal mansion is a stone building, so structurally it’s relatively sound,” said Lewis. “In a lot of other abandoned buildings with wood frames, I won’t step where there’s just floor out of fear I’ll fall through it.”

Despite this, no building can last forever without sufficient repairs. Unless the city of Burlington decides to proceed with its plans to renovate, future owners may be forced to demolish the building and start from scratch.
